A group of staff and students from Algonquin College in Ontario, Canada, have just completed a 20-week trip over approximately the same route that our caravan proposes to cover. From the photos on their website, it looks like they used Chevy crewcab, shortbed pickup trucks. However, they did not pull trailers; they apparently tent-camped and occasionally stayed in hotels. The trip made by this group this year simply highlights that (1) it CAN be done and (2) it can be done SAFELY.

Cape Town to Cairo to Cape Town Caravan Company was incorporated in the fall of 2007 with the goal of planning and bringing to fruition the 2009 Cape Town to Cairo to Cape Town 50th Anniversary Commemorative Trans-Africa Caravan. This event celebrates the 50th anniversary of Wally Byam’s famed 1959 Airstream Caravan from Cape Town to Cairo. The northbound trip is slated to travel from Cape Town to Cairo in the months of September through December, 2009. The southbound trip is slated to travel from Cairo to Cape Town in the months of February through May, 2010.
